One of the most important elements of Christian life is devotion to prayer. It’s our most direct and intimate way to seek and commune with the Lord. Prayer is a skill that takes time to develop, requiring a consistent routine and intentionality.
A fervent prayer life doesn’t come naturally to most people, especially those who were never taught to pray at a young age. However, no matter your background, everyone can learn to develop a powerful, meaningful prayer life. While no one’s relationship with the Lord looks exactly the same, there are biblical principles that we can all follow:
- Pray in faith. We must have faith in the God we pray to (Proverbs 3:5-6), believe He will listen (1 John 5:14-15), and trust that He is working all things for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28).
Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” (Mark 9:23)
Therefore, I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them. (Mark 11:24)
- Make time for uninterrupted prayer. Set aside time each day to commune with God in an environment free of distractions.
Seek the Lord and His strength; seek His face evermore! (1 Chronicles 16:11)
- Tell God the desires of your heart. God cares for what you want, as well as what you need.
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)
And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:19)
- Listen for God’s voice. If you continuously ask but never pause to listen, you may be too distracted to hear God’s response.
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him… (Psalm 37:7)
- Intercede for your neighbor, as well as your enemy.
But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you. (Matthew 5:44)
- Thank the Lord for His hand over your life. In expressing gratitude, we acknowledge the role God has played in answering our prayers.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving. (Colossians 4:2)
God our Father desires an intimate relationship with each of us. He is always available to speak, no matter the time, place, or season. But while He is always pursuing us, it is our responsibility to “pick up the phone” and answer the call to relationship.
